This morning I came up with a new measure for how uncomfortable it is to wear heavy VR headsets for hours for even entirely immobile activities:
“Pound-hours”
The calculation is simple.
[headset weight in lbs] * [time in VR session in hours] = Pound-hours for a session spent in VR goggles.
An example:
The Apple Vision Pro weighs about 1.4 pounds. If you watch a 44 minute show wearing it on your cross-country flight (or your couch), you’ve accumulated about 1 Pound-hour.
On the other hand, the Bigscreen Beyond weighs about .28 pounds. If you spent 3 and half hours in the Beyond across SteamVR games, some VRChat, and maybe a racing simulator, you will also have accumulated… 1 Pound-hour.
